Column Ruler
Table rulers can be displayed by choosing View > Tables > Table Rulers. The Column Ruler is the horizontal ruler that appears at the top of the Edit pane when the cursor is located within a table.
The Column Ruler provides the following features:
• A ruler display of the width of the table and each column in the table.
• Column tabs for resizing the columns in the table.
• Table width tab (the right-most tab) for adjusting the width of the entire table.
• Selecting columns using the rulers.
• Access to the Column Ruler shortcut menu. Click between column tabs with the right mouse button to display a shortcut menu of functions to manipulate the currently selected columns. The following table provides a summary of the options available on the Column Ruler shortcut menu.
Option
Description
Cut
Removes the selected columns from your table and places the columns on the clipboard. Not available for discontinuous column selections.
Copy
Copies the selected columns and places the columns on the clipboard. Not available for discontinuous column selections.
Paste
Inserts the columns on the clipboard to the left of the currently selected columns.
Paste Insert Left
Inserts the columns on the clipboard to the left of the currently selected columns.
Paste Insert Right
Inserts the columns on the clipboard to the right of the currently selected columns.
Insert Column Left
Inserts a new column to the left of the currently selected columns. Not applicable to custom tables.
Insert Column Right
Inserts a new column to the right of the currently selected columns. Not applicable to custom tables.
Delete Column
Removes the selected columns from your table. Not applicable to custom tables.
Span Cells
Combines two or more selected cells. The contents of the cells are preserved and distributed across the newly spanned cell. Not applicable to custom tables.
Unspan Cells
Splits cells which have been spanned. Any content is placed in the upper left most cell. Not applicable to custom tables.
Convert Column Dimensions
Changes the unit of measurement for the currently selected columns. The current unit of measure has a check mark next to it. Not applicable to custom tables.
Table Properties
Displays the Table Properties dialog box.
Ruler Display Dimensions
Accesses a submenu for selecting the ruler units for the Column Ruler.
