Internal aligned equations are designed for use inside equation lines, not to split the equation itself into separate lines. They cannot get individual equation numbering.
If you simply want to add a line to your equation, use one of the Insert Row commands under the Commands menu, or simply press the ENTER key to break a line at the current insertion point. This allows each line to be numbered if numbering is desired.
Although inserting internal aligned equations at the beginning of lines is prevented, they are still legal. If you are sure that you need this construct here, insert a temporary symbol as the first character on the line (type any character), insert the internal aligned equations after it, then delete the temporary symbol.
