What are the minimum system requirements for the Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition?

The Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition is based on the commercial version of Pro/MECHANICA 2001. Commercial hardware requirements are located at:

Most of the system requirements for the Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition are the same as the requirements for the Pro/ENGINEER Student Edition. The following differences do apply:

• Main Memory - 96 MB
• Available Disk Space - 870 MB
• Swap Space - 200 MB
• MS Visual C++ V5.0, V6.0
• For Windows 2000 install and use the i486_nt executable

When trying to use Pro/MECHANICA Motion, an error message indicates compilation failed. What is the problem?

Pro/MECHANICA Motion requires that a Microsoft Visual C++ Compiler be installed in order to compile the system of equations of motion for a model. The environment variable MM_C_HOME must be set appropriately to the location of the compiler. This may be specified on Windows NT workstations from within the System control panel environment settings, or by adding the following line to the autoexec.bat file on Windows 95/98 or Windows NT/ME workstations.

For Microsoft Visual C++ Version 5.0: set MM_C_HOME= c:\msvc50\vc

For Microsoft Visual C++ Version 6.0: set MM_C_HOME= c:\DevStudio\vc98

Be sure to use the appropriate drive letter in the path specification to your compiler installation.

What are the differences between the commercial version and the student edition of Pro/MECHANICA?

The Student Edition includes features which make it uniquely suited for personal, educational use. These restrictions do not inhibit personal, educational use of the software:

• Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition modules are accessible only via the Pro/ENGINEER Student Edition user interface (i.e. as integrated functionality) and will not operate as standalone applications. The interoperability and security restrictions as described for the Pro/ENGINEER Student Edition also apply to Pro/MECHANICA models and objects.
• Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition does not have access to floating options.
• Plotted deliverables generated using Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition will display a plot banner along the four page borders indicating that the object being printed was created with an educational version of Pro/MECHANICA. This banner will be present on Pro/MECHANICA plotted deliverables including drawings.
• Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition will not read or write trail files.
• Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition will only run when a user has the Pro/ENGINEER Student Edition CDROM (of the same release, e.g. 2000i2) in the local Drive. The CD must remain in the local drive during the users entire session.
• Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition is compatible with the Pro/MECHANICA Education Edition found in your labs. (*Provided that the Student Edition and Education Edition are both the same Pro/ENGINEER release)

What kinds of help tools (online tutorials/printed manuals/general help) are provided with the Pro/MECHANICA Student Edition?

PTC's Online Help is shipped with the Student Edition and is installed by default with Pro/ENGINEER. The Online Help can be started from within Pro/ENGINEER by selecting #Help, #Pro/E Help System. Printed documentation is not provided. A Pro/ENGINEER multi-media primer CD is also provided. Furthermore, customers that purchase the Pro/ENGINEER Student Edition from Journey Education receive a printed Pro/ENGINEER Tutorial and are eligible to receive telephone support.

How are the Student Editions licensed?

The Pro/ENGINEER and Pro/MECHANICA Student Editions are licensed for personal or educational use only. For more details, refer to PTC's Student Edition license agreement (which can be found at www.ProEStudent.com). All Student Edition customers must sign this license agreement before receiving the Student Edition.

Is Pro/ENGINEER 2001 Student Edition compatible with a Commercial version of Pro/MECHANICA?

No, the Student Editions of Pro/ENGINEER and Pro/MECHANICA are only compatible with one another. They are not compatible with Commercial versions of PTC Software.
