Creating a New Part
A part in Windchill is a logical database representation of a physical item used to build a product. Physical components can include packaging, product manuals, and software as well as electronic and mechanical components. For more information about parts and their role in configuration management, see Parts and Part Versions.
Use the following procedure to create a part:

If your site has security labels enabled, you may see the Set Security Labels step. For more information about setting security labels, see Setting Security Labels while Creating an Object.
1. Click the New Part icon in a folder browser toolbar.

You can also create, or create and insert a new part in a part structure by:
selecting New > New Part in the Actions menu in a folder browser toolbar.
selecting Insert New in the Structure tab toolbar on a part information page.
clicking the Insert new icon on the Uses tab within the Structure tab toolbar.
selecting Insert > Insert New on the right-mouse menu for any part in the part structure pane.
2. In the New Part window, select a part type from the Type list. The New Part window is refreshed and the Part Attributes section is displayed.

The attributes displayed in the New Part window depend on the selected object type, the Windchill software applications that are installed, and your company part attribute extensions. For standard Windchill attribute definitions, see Part Attributes.
3. Specify whether the part to be created is an end item using the Create as End Item menu. Creating an end item may change the attributes shown in the Part Attributes section.
4. Enter values for attributes shown in the Part Attributes section. Attributes marked with an asterisk are required.
5. Select Create CAD Document to create and associate a blank CAD document to the newly created part. Selecting this option adds the New CAD Document step.
6. Select Keep checked out after checkin to retain control of the newly created part for further editing.
7. If Create CAD Document was selected in step 5, click Next and enter attribute information about the associated CAD document. Enter the following information:
Attribute
Description
Context
The context that will contain the new CAD document. Select a context from the drop-down list. For more information, see Contexts Overview.
Authoring Application
The CAD application used to author the data contained in the CAD document. Selecting the authoring application may preselect values for other attributes, for example Category, Type, and Template Name.
Category
Use to select whether the CAD document will be a CAD assembly or component. The Template Name choices are determined by the Category.
Type
Select the CAD document type from the drop-down list.
Template Name
Select the CAD document template file name that the new CAD document will reference (including the file extension). Selecting the template file determines the attributes that are available in the Attributes section. Click the Default button to save the currently-selected template as the default. When you return to the New Part window and create a related CAD document, the default CAD template will be pre-selected.
Number
If the word Generated displays, the number is automatically generated at your site and no additional information is required.
If the number is not automatically generated, complete one of the following options:
Enter a number for the new CAD document.
Select Same As Part Number to synchronize the number of the CAD document with the base number of its related part. Whether or not the file extension is included in the number is determined by the following preference: Operation > Upload Operation > Upload > Drop File Extension from Number.
Name
If the word Generated displays, the name is automatically generated at your site and no additional information is required.
If the name is not automatically generated, enter a name for the new CAD document. The default name is the same as the part name. Whether or not the file extension is included in the name is determined by the following preference: Operation > Upload Operation > Upload > Drop File Extension from Name.
File Name
The file name used for the new CAD model file. The Same As Number checkbox indicates that the file name will be the same as the Number. Accept the default or clear the Same As Number check box and enter a file name, including extension, for the new CAD document.
Description
Enter a description of the CAD document.
Location
The default location for the new CAD document is the same as the location for the associated part. Select either Autoselect Folder to allow the system to assign a location (the proposed location is shown in parenthesis), or select Select Folder to enter a path or browse to a folder within the selected Context where the CAD document will be saved. Clicking the set location icon displays the Set Location page to select a folder location.
8. If a Set Attachments step appears, you can use the Attachments table to add secondary content to the part.
Attachments are not considered standalone objects and, therefore, have limited functionality. You can also add and remove attachments when editing a part.

Administrators enable attachments on parts from the Preference Management table under Part Management > Attachments on parts.
9. Click Finish to complete the creation of the part and related CAD document (if applicable).
