Description
Behavioral Modeling is used in this example to design a floor lamp that will not tip over. When the center of gravity of the lamp assembly resides at a radial position along the height of the lamp that exceeds the radius of the base, the lamp will tip over. Therefore, the size and weight of the base of the lamp are adjusted automatically through an optimization study to minimize the distance of the center of gravity from the centerline of the base and lamp pole.
Animated motion in Mechanism is also used in this example to show the motion of the lamp and to provide the designer with a clearer understanding of how that motion affects the position of the center of gravity of the assembly.
This example illustrates a type of design problem experienced by many of our customers who design products that must not tip over. The method for solving the problem without Behavioral Modeling is to build prototypes or iteratively determine a solution in design environment.
