Renumbering Fault Trees
Renumbering fault trees consists of assigning gates and/or events new sequential identifiers based on values you supply in the Fault Tree Renumbering Wizard.
1. If you want to renumber the gates and/or events in only one particular tree, select the record for its top gate in the Fault Tree table.
2. Select FTA > Renumber Fault Tree. The Fault Tree Renumbering Wizard starts and displays the Select Fault Trees page.
3. Select the trees to renumber, referring to the following table for option descriptions.
Option
Description
All fault trees in my system
When selected (default), new identifiers are to be assigned to all trees.
Only the selected fault tree
When selected, new identifiers are to be assigned only to the selected tree.
Selected fault tree and all children
When selected, new identifiers are to be assigned to the selected tree and all trees linked by transfer gates.
4. Click Next. The Select Figures page appears.
5. Select the fault tree objects you want to renumber, referring to the following table for option descriptions.
Option
Description
Renumber gates only
When selected, the gates in the selected trees are to have new identifiers assigned.
Renumber events only
When selected, the events in the selected trees are to have new identifiers assigned.
Renumber both gates and events
When selected (default), both the gates and events in the selected trees are to have new identifiers assigned.
6. Click Next. Select Format pages for the objects to renumber appear.
If both gates and events are to be renumbered (default), the first Select Format page displays options for gates, and the second Select Format page displays options for events.
If only gates or only events are to be renumbered, the Select Format page for that object appears.
The options on the Select Format pages for gates and events are similar. The following table describes all options that can appear on this page. If an option is available only for a gate or only for an event, this is noted in the description. The defaults for various options are based on settings for Identifiers > FTA Gate Identifier and Identifiers > FTA Event Identifier in the System file properties. For more information, see Identifiers System File Properties.
Option
Description
Prefix
The text string to precede the number portion of the identifier.
Starting number
The number with which to start identifiers when renumbering.
Minimum digits
The minimum number of digits to use in the number portion of the identifier. For example, if all identifiers are to have two digits (01 through 99), you enter a 2.
Use the same sequence for gates and events
This checkbox appears only on the page for events when both gates and events are to be renumbered. When it is cleared (default), the numbering sequence for events is independent of the numbering sequence for gates. When it is selected, the numbering sequence for gates is also to be used for events. Thus, Starting number and Minimum digits become unavailable on the page for events.
Suffix
The text string that is to follow the number portion of the identifier.
Sample
A representation of what the identifier looks like based on what you have supplied for the above options.
Save Identifier data when finished
Indicates whether new identifiers and format options are to be saved after renumbering is completed. When this checkbox is cleared (default), identifier data is not saved. When this checkbox is selected, this identifier data is saved in the System file properties. For more information, see Identifiers System File Properties.
7. Complete each of the Select Format pages and click Next. The Confirm Changes page appears.
Because the renumbering of gates and events cannot be undone, No is the default selection on this page. You must select Yes to make the Next button available.
If you want to cancel the wizard and discard your changes, you would click Cancel. When the confirmation window opens, you click Yes to confirm this action or No to return to the Confirm Changes page.
8. To renumber selected trees, click Yes on the Confirm Changes page; then, click Next. The Wizard Complete page appears, indicating that changes cannot be undone.
If you click Back instead of Finish on this page, the default selection of No is restored on the Confirm Changes page.
9. Click Finish.
A Global Change window opens, indicating the progress made as gates and/or events are assigned new identifiers. The amount of time necessary to complete this process depends on the number of gates and/or events in the selected trees.
Once all changes are made, a window opens, indicating the number of gates and/or events that were renumbered. You click OK close the window.
