Audit Trail File Storage
In the Project properties, General > Enable Audit Trail controls whether Audit Trail files are generated. When this checkbox is selected, the Audit Trail application collects audit trail data in local files stored in the Audit Trail folder in the Windchill Risk and Reliability installation directory. For example, on the application server, the path is probably:
C:\Program Files(x86)\PTC\Windchill Risk and Reliability 12.0\Windchill Risk and Reliability\AuditTrail
Audit trail data is saved in files that are date-based. Audit Trail files can be created daily, weekly (default), monthly, or quarterly. You can determine which interval to use based on the amount of audit trail data that is collected. For example, if you are collecting lots of audit trail data, a smaller time interval (daily or weekly) is more reasonable. If, however, you are collecting only a little audit trail data, a larger time interval (monthly or quarterly) is more reasonable.
The time interval used in the creation of Audit Trail files is a global option an administrator specifies for General > Audit Trail archive interval in the Options window in the Administrator application.
The name that is assigned to an Audit Trail file reflects the time interval that was selected for audit trail data collection at the time the file was created. A four-digit year indicates the year of creation. If the month is relevant, a two-digit month (04 for April or 12 for December) indicates the month of creation. If the day is relevant, a two-digit day indicates the day of creation (03 or 31).
The following table provides the file name format assigned to an Audit Trail file based on the time interval selection.
Time Interval
File Name Format
Daily
AuditTrail-YYYY-MM-DD.rau, where YYYY-MM-DD is the year, month, and day of the archive file.
Weekly
AuditTrail-YYYY-MM-DD - yyyy-mm-dd.rau, where YYYY-MM-DD is the year, month, and day of the first day of the week and yyyy-mm-dd is the year, month, and day for the last day of the week of the archive file.
Monthly
AuditTrail-YYYY-MM.rau, where YYYY-MM is the year and month of the archive file.
Quarterly
AuditTrail-YYYY-QN.rau, where YYYY is the year and QN is the quarter (such as Q1, Q2, Q3, or Q4) of the archive file.
The creation of time-based Audit Trail files provides archives of old audit trail data. For example, your company policy might be to move Audit Trail files more than a year old to a backup location, such as an offsite machine or some removable medium.
