Entering Pistons and Cylinders
The following table describes the part parameters required for pistons and cylinders.
Parameter
Type
Description
Base Failure Rate
Real (Failures/Million Cycles). Used in Lambda b calculation
The base or manufacturer-supplied failure rate. Generally, this field is left at #.# so that the failure rate is calculated based on the values entered for other parameters. If you enter a value for this parameter, this value is used in place of a calculated failure rate.
Wear Factor
Real. Used in Lambda b calculation
The wear factor is equal to 0.2 for materials that have a high susceptibility to adhesive wear. The wear process involves a transfer to material from one surface to the other.
The wear factor is equal to 0.54 for materials that have little tendency to transfer material, The material is subject to micro-gouging of the surfaces by the asperities on the material surface.
Yield Strength
Real (psi). Used in Lambda b calculation
The yield strength of softer material in psi.
Transverse Load
Real (lbs). Used in Lambda b calculation
The traverse or side load on the actuator in pounds.
Piston Length
Real (in). Used in Lambda b calculation
The length of the piston in inches.
Piston Diam
Real (in). Used in Lambda b calculation
The diameter of the piston in inches.
Cylinder Diameter
Real (in). Used in Lambda b calculation
The diameter of the cylinder in inches.
Surface Area
Real (sq. in). Used in Lambda b calculation
The surface area contacting both the piston and cylinder.
Poisson's Ratio - Cyl
Real. Used in Lambda b calculation
Poisson's ratio for the cylinder.
Poisson's Ratio - Piston
Real. Used in Lambda b calculation
Poisson's ratio for the piston.
Modulus of Elast - Cyl
Real (psi * E6). Used in Lambda b calculation
The modulus of elasticity for the cylinder material. For more information, see Modulus of Elasticity Values for Cylinders and Pistons.
Modulus of Elast - Piston
Real (psi * E6) [Ge]. Used in Lambda b calculation
The modulus of elasticity for the piston. See the previous table for values for common materials.
Penetration Hardness
Real (psi). Used in Lambda b calculation
The penetration hardness of the material in psi.
Wear Coeff
Real. Used in Lambda b calculation
The value of the wear coefficient in the severe-wear region. For more information, see Wear Coefficients.
Applied Load
Real (lb). Used in Lambda b calculation
The applied load in pounds of force.
Sliding Dist
Real (in). Used in Lambda b calculation
The total distance that the piston slides or the stroke length.
Leakage Rate
Real (in cubed/sec). Used in Lambda b calculation
The leakage rate past the piston.
Viscosity
Real (Lbf-sec/in^2). Used in Cv calculation
The viscosity of the fluid. Entered values are multiplied by xE-8 to obtain actual viscosity. Fluid viscosity changes with temperature. For more information, see Viscosity.
Pressure Differential
Real (psi). Used in Lambda b calculation
The pressure differential in psi across the piston.
Material Hardness Ratio
Real. Used in Ccp calculation
The ratio of the hardest particle to the cylinder hardness expressed as a percentage. For more information, see Material Hardness.
Filter Size
Real (microns). Used in Ccp calculation
The system filter size in microns.
Contaminant Rate
Real.(Gram/gpm). Used in Ccp calculation
The expected rate of contaminant generation per hour. For more information, see Contaminant Rates.
Activation E Constant (K)
Real (Degrees K). Used in Ct calculation
Must be given in Degrees K. The valid range is from 1200 to 6000.
Temperature Rise
Real (Degrees C). Used in Ct calculation
The temperature rise from the ambient subassembly temperature to this component. The temperature rise plus the ambient temperature is equal to the operating temperature of the device.
Cycles/Hour
Real
The number of cycles/hour. This is required to convert failure ratings from failures/cycle to failures/hour.
