Entering Gears and Splines
The following table describes the part parameters required for gears and splines.
Parameter
Type
Description
Base Failure Rate
Real. Used in Lambda b calculation.
The base or manufacturer-supplied failure rate.
For gears, a value must be entered for this parameter so that a an adjusted base failure rate can be calculated. The units for gear failure rates are failures per million operating hours.
For splines, this field is generally left at #.# so that the failure rate is calculated based on the values entered for other parameters. If you enter a value for this parameter, this value is used in place of a calculated failure rate. The units for spline failure rates are failures per million revolutions.
Operating Load
Real. Used in Cgp calculation.
Required only for the Gear subcategory.
The operating load factor to determine the effect of torque.
Rated Load
Real. Used in Cgp calculation.
Required only for the Gear subcategory.
The rated load factor to determine the effect of torque.
Spline Length
Real (in). Used in Lambda b calculation.
Required only for the Spline subcategory.
The length of the spline in inches.
Spline Diameter
Real (in). Used in Lambda b calculation.
Required only for the Spline subcategory.
The diameter of the spline in inches.
Torque
Real (inch pounds). Used in Lambda b calculation.
Required only for the Spline subcategory.
The torque in inch pounds applied to the spline.
Tooth Hardness
Real (Brinnell) (Kg/sq mm). Used in Lambda b calculation.
Required only for the Spline subcategory.
The hardness of the spline teeth.
Misalignment Angle
Real (radians). Used in Cga and Lambda b calculation.
The effect of alignment.
Oper Viscosity (xE-8)
Real (Lb-Min/Sq In * E-8). Used in Cgl calculation.
The operating viscosity of the lubricating fluid. Entered values are multiplied by 1E-8 to obtain actual viscosity. Fluid viscosity changes with temperature. For more information, see Viscosity.
Spec Viscosity (xE-8)
Real (Lb-Min/Sq In * E-8). Used in Cgl calculation.
The specified viscosity of the lubricating fluid. Entered values are multiplied by 1E-8 to obtain actual viscosity. The options here are the same as for the above field.
Temperature Rise
Real (Degrees C). Used in Cgt calculation.
The temperature rise from the ambient subassembly temperature to this component. The temperature rise plus the ambient temperature is equal to the operating temperature of the device.
Rated Temperature
Real (Degrees C). Used in Cgt calculation.
The maximum temperature rating specified by the manufacturer or the maximum design temperature.
Operating Speed
Real. Used in Cgs calculation.
The gear or spline operating speed to determine the effect of speed deviation on design.
Design Speed
Real. Used in Cgs calculation.
The gear or spline rated speed to determine the effect of speed deviation on design.
AGMA Service Factor
Real. Used in Cgv calculation.
Provided by the manufacturer to adjust for conditions found in typical industries. These conditions include vibration, shock, contamination, temperature, and usage rate. For nominal values, see Nominal Service Factor Values.
Revolutions/Hour
---
Required only for the Spline subcategory.
The number of revolutions per hour for the spline. This is required to convert failure rates for splines from failures per revolution to failures per hour.
