Configuring Banner Messages Using the Windchill UI
You can notify users about an upcoming maintenance activity or other alerts using banners. Configuring the banner involves three steps:
Specify the message to be displayed in the banner.
Specify the severity level of the notification.
Make the banner visible.
Specify Banner Message
1. Start the Text Tailoring utility from Site > Utilities.
2. In the Text Tailoring utility, expand Text Tailoring and the Root folder.
3. From the Actions menu or the right-click actions menu of the Text Collection organizer, select New String Organizer.
The New String Organizer window opens.
4. Click the Search icon next to the Internal Name box to select the resource bundle.
The Select User Interface Text dialog box opens.
5. Select BannerResource from the list of resource names, and click OK.
6. Click OK in the New String Organizer window.
The information page for the BannerResource string organizer is displayed in edit mode.
The Entries tab contains three strings. Each of these strings is mapped to a severity level in the Banner Message Severity preference that you will configure in a later step. The string to be displayed in the banner is determined by the value of this preference. For example, if the preference is set to Warning, the string WARNING_MESSAGE will be displayed.
7. Click the View and Edit Entry Properties action for the string corresponding to the severity level of your message.
The View and Edit Entry Properties window opens.
8. Click the Localize action next to the Value box.
The Localize window opens.
9. Enter the message in the Master Text box or in the Translation box for the required language, and click OK.
The message is displayed in the Value box.
10. Click OK in the View and Edit Entry Properties window.
11. Click Save or Done on the BannerResource information page.
The specified message will be displayed when you enable the banner.
Specify the Severity Level of the Message
1. Start the Preference Management utility from Site > Utilities.
2. In the Preference Management utility, under Banner Configuration, select a value for the Banner Message Severity preference.
Info—Informational or advisory messages that do not require immediate attention or action. The messages are displayed with a black information icon.
Warning—Cautionary messages that prompt users to take an action at their own discretion. The messages are displayed with an orange warning icon.
High Importance—Messages that require users to take an action. The messages are displayed with a red alert icon.
The value of this preference automatically determines the following:
Which of the three strings configured in the BannerResource string organizer should be displayed in the banner.
What should be the appropriate display style for the banner to visually communicate the severity of the message.
It is important to configure the correct severity for the message before making the banner visible in the user interface. For example, if the severity is set to Warning, the string WARNING_MESSAGE configured in the BannerResource string organizer will be displayed with a warning icon.
Make the Banner Visible
1. Start the Preference Management utility from Site > Utilities.
2. In the Preference Management utility, under Banner Configuration, set the Show Banner preference.
Yes—The banner is displayed in the user interface.
No—The banner is not displayed in the user interface. This is the default setting.
