New CAD Document
The New CAD Document command is available in Autodesk Inventor and in the Workspace File menu. This command offers an alternative to the native File > New command in Autodesk Inventor.
This command allows you to specify attributes according to the Windchill rules, such as entering attributes according to the list of values. (In some cases, attributes can be used to drive auto-numbering using Object Initialization Rules (OIRs); in addition, some attributes are "required" or have other Windchill constraints which require Windchill access.
To create a new CAD Document:
1. In Autodesk Inventor, select Windchill > New CAD Document. Alternatively, select File > New > CAD Document from Workspace Actions. The New CAD Document window opens.
2. Select a value in the Context box. You can also click and search for the context name.
3. Select values in the Authoring Application, Category, Type, and Template Name boxes. Based on the selected template, the Attributes section of the New CAD Document window opens.
*
Out-of-the-box templates are provided as samples; however, it is recommended that you create your own templates. (For more information on creating templates, see Creating a CAD Document Template.) If you use an out-of-the-box template, you may receive the following warning: “The data format of the following files was migrated to the current release. Previous versions of Autodesk Inventor will not be able to open these files if they are saved.” To suppress this warning you can do one of the following:
use your standard authoring application functionality to correct the file version
create your own templates
updating your existing template to match the current CAD version.
*
In the Template Name box, you can select a template and click Default to set a default template.
4. Specify values for the various attributes like Name, File Name, Revision, Description, and Location.
*
If autonumbering is enabled, the Number box is not available.
5. Select the Create and Associate Part check box to create an associated part with the new CAD document.
*
It is recommended that you associate a part with a CAD document during object creation, and not when you create a structure.
6. Select the Open in Authoring Application check box to open the new CAD document in the selected authoring application.
7. Click OK to create a CAD document in the active Workspace.
Using custom templates in Autodesk Inventor
The Windchill File System allows you to store custom templates created in Autodesk Inventor in any Windchill Commonspace directory. You can later use these templates to create the supported file types (for example, part, assembly, or drawing) in Autodesk Inventor.
To use the custom template:
1. Create a custom template and store it in Windchill.
*
You can customize an existing template to create the required custom template. You can store the custom templates in the Windchill Commonspace directory by using either the Save to Workspace or Import to Workspace command.
2. In Autodesk Inventor, select Get Started > Projects. The Projects window opens.
3. Select Folder Options.
4. Select Templates and click Browse. The Browse for Folder window opens.
5. Browse to the custom templates location in the Windchill Commonspace folder and click Open. The path to the custom templates directory is now visible in the Folders box.
6. Click OK to complete the operation. The custom template is now added in Autodesk Inventor. In Autodesk Inventor, select Getting Started > New to use this template.
