Sample Part Request
The part request process includes a set of tasks that are typically required to request a new part. Depending on how this process is organized and managed in your company, the exact sequence of tasks or the required roles can be adjusted to meet your company needs. The following example represents a typical part request process from inception to completion.
Scenario
A Design Engineer needs to obtain an OEM part number for a manufacturer part that he wants to use in a design. He has located the manufacturer name and part number from a supplier's website.
Process
1. Design Engineer: A part request is created using the New Part Request action from the Action list on the Details page of a product or library. The part name and number are provided for the manufacturer part being requested, and related parts are attached to the request to satisfy the requirements.
2. Design Engineer: The part request is submitted for review by accessing it from the My Tasks table. After the part request is submitted, the PR Monitor tasks appear in the creator’s My Tasks table. The PR Monitor allows the creator to track the status of the part request, or cancel it if needed.
3. PR Coordinator: The Design Engineer’s part request is reviewed to make sure all required information is provided and that it is not a duplicate. If the request is acceptable, the review task is approved and the Component Engineer receives a task to create the OEM part and the AML for the request. If the request requires more information, it is returned to the Design Engineer for rework.
4. Component Engineer: The OEM part and AML are created, and then attached to the part request, as the resultant part, using the Edit Part Request action. The Design Engineer is notified that the OEM part has been created.
5. Component Engineer – Optional: An MCM (Material Content Declaration) is requested from the manufacturer and attached to the manufacturer parts on the AML list.
6. Component Engineer: After the OEM part and the AML have been created, the part request process enters the implementation state during which a footprint and a symbol are developed for an electronic part, or a CAD model is developed for a mechanical part.
7. Component Engineer – Optional: If an alternate supplier part is required, an additional supplier part is located and added to the AML for the OEM part.
8. Supply Base Manager: An AVL is created and a cost analysis is validated or performed.
9. Component Engineer: The part request is approved, the resultant part is set to Released, and the team is notified that the requested part has been released.
