Initiating a Part Request
Information provided in the part request can vary depending on a business situation. Typically, a Design Engineer’s request for a new part follows one of these scenarios:
Request a new part by providing a part description
A Design Engineer downloads a data sheet from a manufacturer’s website along with the part number of the desired part. This information is attached to the part request and a request that a similar part be created in Windchill is initiated. If the Component Engineer suggests an alternate part, the Design Engineer provides the critical characteristics that must be satisfied.
Request a new part by providing a part number and a part manufacturer
A Design Engineer searches for a required part in the internal part library. When a suitable part is found, and if that part does not yet exist in Windchill, the Design Engineer creates a part request and provides the manufacturer part name and number.
Request a new part using the Fast Track workflow
A Design Engineer creates an OEM part, a corresponding manufacturer part, and the AML ahead of time. A part request is created and the OEM and manufacturer parts are attached to the part request. If the Component Engineer finds the proposed parts suitable, the AML creation and implementation steps are skipped.

When a part request is created, it can be submitted immediately after filling out the request, or submitted later.
