Managing Documents
Windchill documents allow you to manage and share content within your organization. The information contained in each document type is collectively referred to as primary content. Most commonly, primary content is content that has been uploaded from a file such as a Microsoft Word document, a spreadsheet, or presentation. For more information, see Documents in Windchill.
If you have additional or secondary content related to your primary content, you can add that information as an attachment to the Windchill document. For more information, see Attachments.
You can interact with primary content in the following ways:
Lock a document for editing and then create a new iteration of the document for other users to access.
*
From the Folder Contents table, you can perform most actions on multiple documents at once. However, you can perform the following actions even if more than one object type is selected (for example, a selection of parts and documents):
Check In
Check Out
Undo Checkout
When performed on multiple documents at once, the Check In window does not include an option to upload primary content.
Modify document attributes and, if necessary, replace the primary content.
Depending on the content type, use this action to replace an uploaded file with another file, change the URL link, or modify an external content description.
Create an out-of-sequence revision of an existing document. For example, if you are working with a document that has the version identifier A.1, you can create version D.1 without first creating B and C revisions.
Download
Download the primary content file without checking it out.
Download multiple Windchill documents at once to a compressed file (ZIP).
Email the primary content files of a document and its attachments.
If the Windchill Desktop Integration plugin is installed, you can use Microsoft Office applications and Windows Explorer to create and modify documents without opening Windchill in a browser. For more information, see Windchill Desktop Integration.
