Document Names Over 40 Characters
There is a difference in the allowed database character length for the document name attribute in Windchill and the document description attribute in SAP to which it is mapped. The Windchill document name field limit is 160 characters, whereas the SAP document description field limit is 40 characters. If documents from Windchill have document names that are greater than 40 characters, SAP truncates the document description prior to saving the data to the system and only stores the first 40 characters passed from Windchill.
To prevent this from happening, you can do one of the following:
• Ask your administrator to add validation to the Windchill GUI to prevent document names that are over 40 characters. For more information on how to limit attribute lengths in Windchill PDMLink, refer to the section Customizing Column Lengths in the Windchill Customizer’s Guide.
• Ask your administrator to modify SAP to allow documents to be created with document descriptions up to 160 characters.
• Modify the EAI software components to truncate document names to meet the required SAP field length.
For more information, have your administrator refer to the Windchill Enterprise Systems Integration Installation and Configuration Guide - SAP.
