Editable Field Value Attributes (FVAs) are the mechanism used to expose data to the user contained on the Shared Item through the Node in a document.

When you are creating a field that contains common data across all instances of its use, you create it on the Shared Item and create a paired FVA on the Node. If the field is project-specific, it only needs to be created on the Node.
