Replacing a Part in a Structure
In addition to the Insert Existing, Insert New, and Remove actions for part structure editing, the Replace action is available to edit an existing part usage in the part structure with a new part, an existing part, or a replacement part. Contrary to the part structure editing actions available for removing one part and inserting another, the Replace action maintains the same usage information when replacing the existing child part with another child part.
Consider the following options for replacing a part using the Replace action.
Action
Description
Replace with Alternate/Substitute
Opens a window displaying the alternate and substitute parts defined for the current part. Select a part and click OK to replace the current child part with the selected part.
Replace with Existing

Replace with New

To replace a part in an assembly, perform the steps below.
1. Select the Structure tab on the part information page.
2. Select the child part you want to replace.
3. Select the appropriate action from the Replace action available in the right-click actions menu.
The Replace with Alternate/Substitute action is disabled if no alternates or substitutes are defined for the part.
4. Select the part you want to use as a replacement and click OK.
5. If the part is within a structure that is synchronized with CAD, a message appears asking if you want the change synchronized with future CAD builds. For more information, see
Top-down Design.
6. If not checked out previously, the parent assembly is automatically checked out. Check in the parent part if no further modifications are required. A new iteration of the parent assembly is created.
7. If you have selected an alternate or a substitute part, note the following:
◦ When the original part is replaced by a substitute, the original part is shown as a substitute.
◦ When the original part is replaced by a two-way alternate, the original part is shown as an alternate. However, the original part is not shown as an alternate when the alternate is one-way.
Performing a Replace with a Substitute
When replacing with an existing substitute part, the existing child part becomes a substitute for the replacing part. When the preference > is enabled:
• The attributes for quantity and reference designator are updated on the usage based on the information defined on the substitute.
• The attributes for quantity and reference designator are updated on the substitute based on the original information defined on the usage.
When the quantity or reference designator value is changed, corresponding changes are applied to the occurrences.
