Autonumbering of File Names in SolidWorks

When Windchill autonumbering is enabled using Object Initialization Rules (OIR), SOLIDWORKS uses the Windchill PDMLink autonumber generator to create new file names. When new files are created using the native SOLIDWORKSFile > New function, the autogenerated number is allocated to the file name during the initial creation.

Windchill autonumbering of new SOLIDWORKS file names is supported in the following scenarios:

• Creating new Parts, Assemblies, or Drawings using the SOLIDWORKSNew command.

• Creating new Parts or Assemblies in the context of an Assembly.

• Creating new SOLIDWORKS Configurations (see the Configurations section for more detail on enabling autonumbering for configurations).

Autonumbering of Drawing files is supported when the Inherit Model File Name preference is set to No.

Autonumbering may not apply to all scenarios where new parts and assemblies are created.

Previously, when Windchill PDMLink autonumbering was enabled, new components created using the Insert > Mirror Components > Opposite Hand Version command in SOLIDWORKS were not autonumbered.

Beginning at Windchill 11.0 F000, parts created through the Mirror Components command are allocated autonumbers in the same way as parts created using File > New in SOLIDWORKS. Once the autonumber has been applied to the mirrored component, the new part can be uploaded and checked in like any other file.

This functionality has the following characteristics:

• When there are multiple mirrored files – for example, in the mirroring of an assembly – all files created with Opposite Hand Version will be saved with Windchill autonumbering.

• Prefixes, suffixes, and custom names applied to the file by the user are ignored. The Windchill autonumber is assigned to the file without these designations.

• Similarly, the default SOLIDWORKS prefix “Mirror” will also be ignored, and the Windchill autonumber will be assigned to the file without this prefix.

• Windchill autonumbering is not provided for Derived Configurations or suppressed Mirror Components.

• Since SOLIDWORKS does not mirror Toolbox parts, these parts are unaffected.

• A reference of the Design Reference type is created between the parent part and its mirrored part. If a part configuration is mirrored, then a reference is created between that configuration and its generic.

Use Case — A user creates a new part in the context of an assembly using the Mirror command.

1. Open a SOLIDWORKS assembly in SOLIDWORKS from the Workspace or Commonspace.

2. Create a mirrored file from one of the parts in the assembly using the SOLIDWORKSInsert > Mirror Components > Step 3: Opposite Hand command.

3. The new file name and number is provided by the Windchill autonumber OIR generator. User-provided prefixes, suffixes, or custom names are not retained.

4. The same result is obtained when the Mirror ComponentSOLIDWORKS UI is used to create mirrored assemblies and parts from a selected file (SLDASM).
