Welcome to the OSLC Digital Product Traceability (DPT) Help Center
The OSLC DPT help center contains reference topics for all of those PTC products (and third-party products) that leverage OSLC functionalities.
What is OSLC?
OSLC (Open Services for Lifecycle Collaboration) is an open standard that defines specifications which support the integration of enterprise systems with a focus on domains used in the front of the product development cycle. The main objective of OSLC is to enable collaboration and design traceability in an easy to deploy and support methodology. Using OSLC allows companies to more effectively integrate disparate tool chains and enable end-to-end processes that cover the entire product development lifecycle. For more information on OSLC, refer to their website:
http://open-services.net.
In the deployment of OSLC, PTC leverages several of the domains to enable a more capable digital thread. These domains include the following:
• Requirements
• Architecture
• Change
• Config domain
What is DPT?
DPT stands for Digital Product Traceability, a framework and set of tools designed to track, manage, and validate every aspect of a product's lifecycle in digital form. From initial design and engineering, through manufacturing, deployment, and service, DPT enables organizations to maintain a comprehensive digital record of all product-related activities and changes. This ensures regulatory compliance, improves quality assurance, and supports efficient collaboration across teams and products.
By leveraging cloud-specific technologies and integrating with platforms like ThingWorx and Windchill, DPT allows for scalable, secure, and real-time visibility into product data. It forms the backbone of the digital thread strategy, connecting disparate systems and processes into a unified view, which is essential for modern digital transformation initiatives.
PTC offers several products that collectively support the Digital Product Traceability (DPT) framework, each playing a distinct role in the digital thread strategy. The primary products involved include Windchill with ThingWorx as its middleware, Codebeamer, PTC RV&S, and PTC Modeler.
PTC Products Involved with DPT
Windchill
Windchill serves as the backbone for product lifecycle management (PLM), storing and managing all product data, documents, and changes from initial design through manufacturing and service. It ensures that every step in the product’s journey is captured and accessible, forming a comprehensive digital record. Windchill uses ThingWorx as its Middleware to integrate with other products.
ThingWorx is the Internet of Things (IIoT) platform, connecting physical assets and systems to the digital environment. It collects real-time data from equipment, sensors, and machines, which is then linked to the product records in Windchill. This integration allows for continuous monitoring and validation of product performance and status in the field, enriching the digital thread with operational insights.
Windchill integrates with the following products:
• PTC Modeler
• PTC RV&S
• Codebeamer
• Siemens Polarion (Third-Party)
• Jira (Third-Party)
• IBM DOORs Next Generation (Third-Party)
PTC Modeler
Modeler enables organizations to create, visualize, and manage system architectures and models, ensuring that design intent and system requirements are clearly defined and traceable throughout the product lifecycle. This model-based approach integrates seamlessly with Windchill and PTC RV&S, providing a direct link between system-level designs and detailed engineering data. PTC Modeler integrates with the following products:
• PTC RV&S
• Codebeamer
• Windchill
• Siemens Polarion (Third-Party)
• IBM DOORs (Third-Party)
• IBM DOORs Next Generation (Third-Party)
PTC RV&S
PTC RV&S focuses on capturing, managing, and validating product requirements, changes, and test artifacts. It ensures that requirements are consistently traced from definition through implementation and verification, supporting regulatory compliance and quality objectives.
By integrating with the broader DPT framework, both PTC Modeler and PTC RV&S help maintain a digital thread from initial requirements and system design to manufacturing, deployment, and service, thereby strengthening end-to-end traceability and collaboration across product teams. PTC RV&S integrates with the following products:
• Windchill
• PTC Modeler
Codebeamer
By integrating with other DPT systems such as Modeler, Windchill, and RV&S, Codebeamer establishes links between requirements, system architectures, engineering data, and validation artifacts. This integration provides a digital thread that supports compliance, quality assurance, and collaborative product development across teams and tools. Codebeamer enables organizations to maintain visibility and traceability of product requirements throughout the product lifecycle. Codebeamer integrates with the following products:
• Windchill
• PTC Modeler
• PTC RV&S
Third-Party Products Involved with DPT
Siemens Polarion
Siemens Polarion can integrate with PTC products within the DPT framework to extend traceability across requirements, engineering, and lifecycle management domains. Through standardized interfaces and connectors, Polarion’s requirements management capabilities can be synchronized with that PTC Modeler. This allows requirements defined and managed in Polarion to be linked directly to product data, changes, and validation artifacts in Windchill, as well as to test and verification processes managed by RV&S.
Such integration ensures that requirements captured in Polarion remain traceable throughout the product lifecycle, from initial definition, system modeling (with Modeler), manufacturing, and service. Real-time data and updates can flow between Polarion and PTC systems, maintaining a consistent digital thread and supporting regulatory compliance, quality assurance, and collaborative development. This unified approach empowers organizations to seamlessly bridge requirements management with PLM and IIoT capabilities, ensuring comprehensive end-to-end traceability across teams and tools. Polarion integrates with the following PTC products:
• PTC Modeler
• Windchill
IBM DOORS and DOORS Next Gen
IBM DOORS and DOORS Next Generation are widely adopted requirements management solutions that can play a significant role within the Digital Product Traceability (DPT) initiative. These platforms enable organizations to capture, manage, and trace requirements throughout the entire product lifecycle, from conception to deployment and service. By integrating DOORS or DOORS Next Gen with core DPT systems such as PTC Windchill or RV&S, requirements managed in IBM’s tools become linked with product data, design models, and validation artifacts, ensuring that every requirement is consistently traceable across engineering, manufacturing, and service domains.
This integration enhances the digital thread by allowing real-time synchronization of requirements, changes, and test results between DOORS and the broader DPT ecosystem. As a result, organizations can maintain compliance, improve quality assurance, and enable agile collaboration across dispersed teams. The ability to bridge requirements management with PLM and IIoT systems ensures that all aspects of product development remain connected, verifiable, and accessible, supporting the goal of comprehensive end-to-end traceability. IBM DOORs and DOORs Next Generation integrates with the following PTC products:
• PTC Modeler (DOORs and DOORs Next Generation
• Windchill (DOORs Next Generation
Jira
Jira integrates with Windchill to facilitate end-to-end traceability between product lifecycle management (PLM) data and issue tracking or agile development workflows. Typically, this integration is achieved using middleware (ThingWorx) that establishes links between Jira issues (such as bugs, user stories, or tasks) and Windchill artifacts (such as parts, documents, or change requests). This allows teams to reference and trace requirements, changes, and defects across both platforms, ensuring alignment between engineering, quality, and development activities.
Windchill is the only PTC product that integrates with Jira through OSLC.
IBM ETM
IBM Engineering Test Management (ETM) integrates with Codebeamer in the DPT ecosystem by leveraging standardized interfaces such as OSLC, where Codebeamer functions as the primary server and central repository for requirements and lifecycle artifacts. In this setup, ETM connects to Codebeamer to establish links between test cases and requirements, allowing users to trace verification activities directly back to the source requirements managed in Codebeamer. This integration supports real-time navigation and traceability, ensuring that test results and validation evidence are always associated with the latest version of requirements stored in Codebeamer.
IBM ETM connects only with Codebeamer, which serves as its OSLC server, in the DPT ecosystem.
