Upgrading Microsoft SQL Server
*
All actions described here must be performed by a SQL Server Administrator.
Ensure to take a backup of all your databases before upgrading the SQL Server. For instructions on how to backup your database, see Backing up a Database.
Upgrade the existing instance of Microsoft SQL Server (Express Edition) that is installed with Modeler
If you are upgrading from a version of Modeler older than 9.5, then note that the version of SQL Server Express Edition that is installed with Modeler cannot be upgraded directly. To install Modeler 9.5 or later, you must first uninstall the Microsoft SQL Server Express Edition that was installed with the earlier version of Modeler. After you uninstall the older version of the SQL Server, you can install your preferred Modeler version (9.5 or later). Note that SQL Server 2017 Express Edition is installed with Modeler 9.5 and 9.6 and SQL Server 2019 Express Edition is installed with Modeler 10.0 and later versions.
Upgrade Microsoft SQL Server that was not installed with Modeler
If you have installed a separate application of Microsoft SQL Server (not installed with Modeler), then you must first follow the guidelines provided in the links below to upgrade the server:
After you have upgraded Microsoft SQL Server, you can now install PTC Modeler. While installing PTC Modeler, for Server-only and Standalone installations, on the Default Modeler Instance dialog, you must enter the new SQL Server instance.
After you have installed your preferred version of Modeler, you can restore the databases.
Restore databases
Post installation of PTC Modeler, you can restore all your databases.
1. Open Model Explorer and add the new instance (perform this step only if you have created a new instance).
2. Right-click the instance, select Restore Database.
3. Click Select to navigate to the folder of your backed up database and click Open.
