1. Select the expression you want to evaluate symbolically.
2. On the Math tab, in the Operators and Symbols group, click Symbolics, and then click →.
3. Click the placeholder above the symbolic evaluation operator, and then type the keyword or modifier.
Alternatively, on the Math tab, in the Operators and Symbols group, click Symbolics, and then click a keyword or modifier. When the cursor is not inside a math region, you can insert a keyword or modifier and then type the expression you want to evaluate in the placeholder to the left of the symbolic evaluation operator.
4. To insert several keywords above a single symbolic evaluation operator, perform one of the following actions:
◦ Type a comma directly after the first keyword. A placeholder appears. Type or insert another keyword or modifier in the placeholder.
◦ Type or insert the first keyword, press Shift+Enter to add a new line, and then add another keyword.
Some keywords require an argument before adding the next keyword.
• If you evaluate an expression using a single symbolic evaluation operator, then stacking keywords or inserting them on one line returns the same result.
• If you use multiple symbolic evaluation operators to evaluate a single expression, which is known as chaining, then the result depends on the order in which the keywords, modifiers, or arguments you enter.
