About Controlling a Region Calculation
By default, Auto Calculation is enabled, and the numerical results and graphs in your worksheet update automatically. However, some equations take longer to calculate. They may contain repeated evaluations or an algorithm that may take a long time to converge. If you do not want to wait for computations to complete as you edit your worksheet, you can use one of the control options located on the Calculation tab, in the Controls group:
Auto Calculation
This button enables or disables an automatic update of all the results in the worksheet.
When Auto Calculation is disabled and you edit a region, that region and all dependent regions are dimmed, and the results are not recalculated. MANUAL is displayed on the left side of the worksheet
When Auto Calculation is enabled, all results in the worksheet recalculate automatically. The dot on the left side of the status bar turns yellow when the calculations are in progress, and turns green when all calculations are completed. AUTO is displayed on the left side of the worksheet.
Stop All Calculations
This button stops all calculations that are currently in progress. This button can be used to stop an ongoing calculation, enabling you to make changes without waiting for the previous calculation to complete. When there are no ongoing calculations in the worksheet, Stop All Calculations is not available.
If Auto Calculation is enabled, selecting Stop All Calculations while a calculation is ongoing changes the calculation mode from AUTO to MANUAL. Regions that have not yet been calculated are dimmed.
To resume the calculation, turn Auto Calculation back on. The calculation resumes from the last uncalculated region. If you update any of the previously calculated regions or add new regions in the previously calculated pages, recalculation resumes from that point.
If you stay in MANUAL mode, to resume calculation you can select Calculate Worksheet to calculate all math expressions in the worksheet. Alternatively, select Calculate Now to calculate the math expressions in the worksheet until and including the last visible region in the worksheet.
Calculate Worksheet
This button recalculates all math regions in the worksheet.
The dot on the left-hand of the status bar turns yellow when the calculations are in progress, and turns green when all calculations are completed.
Calculate Now
This button calculates all math regions that require a recalculation from the first page of the worksheets until the last visible region in the worksheet. The dot on the left side of the status bar turns yellow when the calculations are in progress, and turns green when all the calculations are completed.
Selecting Calculate Now while in an active region triggers a recalculation of that region.
Calculate Now does not trigger a recalculation of a region in the following cases:
When working with file access functions, if the external source is updated, using Calculate Now in the worksheet does not trigger an update of the imported data unless you change the function arguments, or the function arguments are impacted by other worksheet updates. To ensure that these functions use the latest data, you must activate the region containing the function and then select Calculate Now.
When working with Include Worksheet, if the data in the reference is updated, using Calculate Now in the worksheet does not trigger an update of the imported data unless you edit the file path. To ensure that these functions use the latest data, you must activate the region containing the function, and then select Calculate Now.
The random number function does not generate a new value when using Calculate Now in the worksheet unless you change the argument, or the argument is impacted by other worksheet update. To ensure that this function generates a new number every time, activate the region and press Calculate Now.
Disable Region
This button disables selected regions.
Disabled regions are immediately dimmed, as shown below:
Enabled Region
Disabled Region
You can edit a disabled region but the changes that you make do not affect calculations in subsequent regions.
The state of Auto Calculation does not affect disabled regions.
Selecting Calculate Worksheet or Calculate Now does not affect disabled regions.
Regions that are dependent on definitions or calculation results from disabled regions report errors.
Additional Information
When you open a worksheet, Engineering Notebook does not recalculate results automatically even if Auto Calculation is enabled. You must click Calculate or press Ctrl+F5 to recalculate the worksheet and view the final results. The recalculation is important when you are working with legacy Engineering Notebook worksheets that you converted or with files that contain included worksheets.
When you print a worksheet in manual calculation mode, the results on the printout may not be up to date. Make sure to calculate the worksheet before printing.
