Workflow for Creating a Central Catalog for Legacy Designs
Create a Template Design
1. Create a parameters CSV file from one of the legacy designs.
2. Create a template design with standard parameters and types.
3. Load the parameters CSV file created in step 1.
4. Save a copy of the design as a template design.
5. Create a main Central Catalog directory.
Submit the First Design Items to the Central Catalog
1. Open the first design.
*
Save a copy of the design as a packed design and save the packed file for backup.
2. Confirm that all parameters match the ones in the template design.
3. Create a temporary submission directory specific to this design. This is the design Temporary Submission directory.
4. Set the path to the Temporary Submission directory to point to the design Submission directory.
5. Create a Central Catalog directory specific to this design. This is the design Central Catalog directory.
6. Set the path to the Central Catalog directory to point to the design Central Catalog directory.
7. Click Design > Verify Catalog. The Catalog Verify Results and Resolution dialog box opens.
8. Submit all items that are reported as not in the Central Catalog.
9. Copy the items from the design Temporary Submission directory to the design Central Catalog directory. Make sure that the directory structure and all dependency files are copied correctly.
10. Click Design > Verify Catalog. The Catalog Verify Results and Resolution dialog box opens.
11. Resolve errors.
12. When all errors have been resolved, copy all items in the design Central Catalog directory and paste them in the main Central Catalog directory. Make sure that the directory structure and all dependency files are copied correctly.
Recommended Procedure for all Other Designs
Follow the steps below for all additional designs you merged to the Central Catalog. Local Central Catalog directories are created to store the Central Catalog items. Test the merged designs against a test version of the Central Catalog before updating the Main Central Catalog, new items can cause a synchronization problem that is difficult to identify.
1. Open a design.
*
Save a copy of the design as a packed file for backup.
2. Confirm that all parameters match the ones in the template design.
3. Create a submission directory specific to this design. This is the design Submission directory.
4. Set the path to the Temporary Submission directory to point to the design Submission directory.
5. Create a Central Catalog directory specific to this design. This is the design Central Catalog directory.
6. Temporarily set the path to the Central Catalog directory to point to the main Central Catalog directory. Any conflicts in names or SYS_ID that occur are reported.
7. Resolve synchronization errors (see below). Once errors are resolved, the design is linked to the Central Catalog.
8. Click Design > Verify Catalog. The Catalog Verify Results and Resolution dialog box opens. Differences between the Central Catalog and the Internal Catalog are displayed.
*
After the synchronization all linked items are reported as CC Newer in the Catalog Verify Results and Resolution dialog box.
9. Submit any items that have been linked to the Central Catalog and are newer in the Internal Catalog.
10. Save and close the design. Unused linked catalog items that were not submitted are removed.
11. Open the design.
12. Verify the catalog to find and submit internal catalog with the error Item not in central catalog.
13. Update items in the internal catalog with the error CC Newer.
14. Create a backup of the Central Catalog after the inclusion of each design in the Central Catalog. Follow these steps to generate a snapshot of the Central Catalog including submitted items:
a. Copy the contents of the main Central Catalog to the design's Central Catalog directory.
b. Copy the submitted items to the design's Central Catalog directory (items may be overwritten).
c. Temporarily set the Central Catalog path to the design's Central Catalog.
15. Confirm that no synchronization errors occur.
16. Verify the catalog and confirm no reported errors.
17. Load some of the submitted items to confirm correct operation.
18. Copy submitted items to the main Central Catalog.
19. Set the Central Catalog path to the main Central Catalog.
20. Verify the Central Catalog.
Verify the Central Catalog
Use the following procedure each time a catalog from a design is incorporated into the Central Catalog:
Check the Template Design
1. Open the template design.
2. Set the path to the main Central Catalog.
3. Verify the catalog.
4. Open the Catalog Explorer and load all newly added or modified items.
5. Open the Datatable Explorer and load all newly added or modified items.
6. Close the design.
Check all Previous Designs
1. Open each design.
2. Set the path to the main Central Catalog.
3. Verify the catalog.
4. Update items that are out of date with the Central Catalog.
5. Load a variety of newly added or modified items.
6. Close the design.
Error Resolution
Whenever a catalog synchronization is performed a pre-scan detects conflicting item names. The following errors can appear in the report results dialog:
<filename>: This file contains an item name (<name>) that already exists in the design with a different SYS_ID. A file in the Central Catalog contains an item with the same name as an item in the design, but with a different SYS_ID. There are two reasons for this:
A different catalog item was created in two separate designs.
To resolve this error:
Rename the item in the Internal Catalog and re-synchronize the catalogs.
The item created is the same, but the SYS_IDs are different.
To resolve this error do one of the following:
1. The simple solution—Rename the item in the Internal Catalog. Submit the item to the Central Catalog when you verify the catalog.
2. The complex comprehensive solution—Reassign all uses of the internal catalog item and then delete it. You may have to rename the internal catalog item first to complete the catalog synchronization. Artifacts and datatables are reassigned differently:
Artifact—For all instances of the selected artifact, click to reassign their artifact to the Central Catalog item.
Datatable—Select the artifacts that refer to the datatable in the Catalog Explorer. Click to open the artifact Properties dialog box and replace the datatable with the Central Catalog datatable. The system should reapply all child datasets as required. Membermaps that rely on the datatable need to be deleted. This should not affect the use of the Central Catalog because the membermaps are duplicates as well.
Item already exists with different name.
This error is not currently reported, but the synchronization process lists items that have the same SYS_ID as the central catalog even when they have different names. You must decide if the item is the same or not. The item is different when someone has renamed and edited it in a different design.
To resolve this error:
When the catalog items are not the same, you must copy the item in the Catalog Explorer, select a folder and paste the item in the folder. This creates a new item with a new SYS_ID. Submit the new item to the Central Catalog. Remember to reassign all instances of the original item in the design to the newly pasted item as detailed above.
When the item is the same, rename it.
