Mechanism Design and Mechanism Dynamics > Mechanism Design > Creating Mechanism Models > Modeling Entities > Gears > To Create a Generic Gear Pair
To Create a Generic Gear Pair
1. Click Gears. The Gear Pair Definition dialog box opens.
2. Under Type, select Generic.
3. On the Gear1 tab, click and select a rotational or translational motion axis.
4. The first body in the joint connection is designated as the Carrier and the second body as the Gear. Click to switch the body definition. You can view the body order associated with a given gear in the Mechanism Tree by clicking Gears in the Connections folder, and then clicking the arrow next to the name of the gear.
5. If you selected a rotational axis, enter a value for the diameter of the pitch circle. A circle is displayed with the diameter you entered. The circle is centered around the selected motion axis. A straight line from the center of the circle to the circumference indicates the zero reference point of the motion axis.
6. Under Icon location, click and select a point, a vertex, a datum plane or a surface perpendicular to the axis for the offset of the pitch circle.
7. Fill in the remaining information on the Gear2 tab as described in steps 3–6.
8. On the Properties tab, select a Gear Ratio from the list:
If you select Pitch circle diameter, the values you entered for the pitch circles are displayed on the Gear1 and Gear2 tabs.
If you select User defined and enter real number values for the pitch circle diameters on the Gear1 and Gear2 tabs, the size of the pitch circle does not change.
