Configuring Advanced Server Options
You can set advanced configuration options for AEM. After you have activated the Production license from the previous section, you may want to address these issues:
Increase timeout for PDF generation
Control shortage of temporary file space
Preserve Microsoft Word document markups when publishing a PDF
Convert entire Excel workbooks
Control memory allocation
Publish a PDF with reference links from Microsoft PowerPoint documents through Windchill

When implementing some of these procedures, you may have to stop and restart the AEM Server. To do this, go to Control Panel > Local Services, and stop or start JBoss for Adobe Experience Manager forms.
Setting the Timeout for PDF Generator Service
The timeout for the PDF Generator Service for AEM is set to 270 seconds by default. In addition to the advanced configuration options in this section, refer to the Adobe Help page Timeout for PDFG. To configure the PDF generator transaction timeout, follow the following steps:
1. To open the Experience Manager Server Admin user interface, click
http://localhost:8080/adminui.
2. Log on as administrator.
3. Click Services > Applications and Services > Service Management. The Service Management dialog box opens.
4. Under Name, type PDFG and click Filter. PDFGConfigService appears.
5. Select PDFGConfigService. The Configure PDFGConfigService page opens.
6. Increase the Server Conversion Timeout value as required, and then click Save.
7. Restart the Appserver.

Server global timeout value must be greater than theServer Conversion Timeout.
Setting the Maximum Inline Size for Documents
The maximum inline variable defines the in-memory buffer size for documents being processed with AEM. The default is 64Kb. For greater efficiency, Adobe Technical Support recommends setting this value to be greater than the largest document to be processed. To set the maximum inline size, follow the following steps:
1. To open the Experience Manager Server Admin user interface click
http://localhost:8080/adminui.
2. Log on as administrator.
3. Click Settings > Core System Settings > Configurations. The Core Configurations page opens.
4. Set Default document max inline size (bytes) to a value larger than the estimated maximum document size, and then click OK.
5. Restart the JBoss server.
Setting the Location of Temporary Folders
Large documents require several gigabytes of disk space for temporary input and output of files. If transactions time out occurs, sufficient disk space may be a problem. Moving to a different file system or cleaning out files periodically may be required.
The affected subfolders for disk space are as follows:
%AEM_TEMP_FOLDER%\AdobeDocumentStorage\local\
%AEM_TEMP_FOLDER%\pdfg-<HOSTNAME>\
Default: C:\Windows\Temp
To find both%AEM_TEMP_FOLDER% folders, follow these steps:
1. To open the Experience Manager Server Admin user interface click
http://localhost:8080/adminui.
2. Log on as administrator.
3. Click Settings > Core System Settings > Configurations. The Core Configurations page opens.
4. In the Location of temp directory text box, type a path to a disk with ample disk space, and then click OK.
5. Restart the JBoss server.
Setting up the PDF Generator to Publish PDF from Microsoft Word
To preserve document markups when publishing PDF documents, you must configure the following AEM setting:
1. To open the Experience Manager Server Admin user interface, click
http://localhost:8080/adminui.
2. Log on as administrator.
3. Click Home > Services > PDF Generator > File Type Settings.
4. Click current default file type settings to edit.
5. Expand Microsoft Word.
6. Select Preserve document markup in Adobe PDF.
7. Click Save As to modify the default settings.
8. Enter a name for new File Type Settings to create, and click OK. The File Type Settings page opens. The default file type setting is indicated by .
9. Click Set Default Settings. The Set Default Settings page opens.
10. Select the modified settings name from File Type Settings and click Save.
11. Click Save. The default file type icon, , now indicates the new setting.
Setting up the PDF Generator to Publish PDF from Microsoft Excel
To publish PDF documents that include the entire contents of each Excel file, you must configure the following AEM setting:
1. To open the Experience Manager Server Admin user interface, click
http://localhost:8080/adminui.
2. Log on as administrator.
3. Click Home > Services > PDF Generator > File Type Settings.
4. Expand Microsoft Excel.
5. Select Convert entire workbook.
6. Click Save. The modification is applied to the default file type settings.
Setting up the PDF Generator to Publish PDF from Microsoft PowerPoint
To publish PDF documents that include reference links from PowerPoint source files, you must configure the following AEM setting:
1. To open the Experience Manager Server Admin user interface, click
http://localhost:8080/adminui.
2. Log on as administrator.
3. Click Home > Services > PDF Generator > File Type Settings.
4. Click current default file type settings to edit.
5. Click Microsoft PowerPoint
6. Select Enable accessibility and reflow with tagged Adobe PDF.
7. Click Save. The modification is applied to the default file type settings.
You can now start publishing files from the adapter.
