Creo Simulate labels the direction buttons according to the type of coordinate system that is current (the WCS is a Cartesian system):

You select one axis for each material direction. Since you must select a different coordinate system direction for each material direction, Creo Simulate automatically selects the remaining axis for the third direction after you select axes for the first two directions.
