Begin with the original part and the pattern leader:

When you create a Curve pattern and select the Follow curve direction option, the pattern members are rotated. Each member origin is tangent to the curve.

When the Follow curve direction check box is cleared, each pattern member is placed with the pattern leader's orientation.
