About NIOSH91 Lifting or Lowering Analyses
In 1981, the National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) published a landmark technical report that has become the standard used by ergonomic engineers throughout the world to measure and minimize workplace-related back injuries. A NIOSH91 analysis gathers data from two postures to calculate risk as follows:
• Hand position (distance from the body)
• Horizontal movement
• Vertical movement
• Overall posture
Additional parameters are user-defined:
• Duration
• Object weight
• Frequency
• Quality of grasp
