About Applying Appearances to Assemblies
You can apply appearances to any component or geometry at any level within an assembly. You can choose a component from a top-level assembly or a sub-assembly within the assembly structure and apply the assembly level appearance to the selected component. You can expand the Model Tree and select components within multiple sub-assemblies of an assembly to apply appearances to the selected components. You can also select the components in the graphics window and apply the appearance to the selected components.
The appearances applied to a part in an assembly will only be visible at the assembly level. These appearances do not change the part level appearances when the part is opened.
You can apply and modify textured appearances to quilts at any level in an assembly or sub-assembly.

Applying Appearances to Solid Surfaces of Components in an Assembly
You can select solid surfaces of components from the top-level assembly of a sub-assembly. You can select the top solid surface of a cube or surfaces of holes, chamfers, rounds and so on. However, if a feature is redefined or modified in such a way that some surfaces are lost after rendering, then the appearances cannot be reapplied.

Applying Appearances to Cut Surfaces in an Assembly
You can select cut surfaces in an assembly and apply or modify appearances using the Model Appearance Editor.
Applying Appearances to any Component at any Level in an Assembly
You can apply textured appearances to any component at any level in an assembly. You can modify the appearances applied to individual components and surfaces using the Model Appearance Editor. For example, if you select three components separately and apply an appearance individually to each component using the My Appearances palette, then you can see three instances of that appearance in the Model palette. However, if you select three components of an assembly as a single selection and apply an appearance, then the appearance that you apply appears as a single instance in the Model palette. Modifying this appearance modifies the appearances of all the three components.
Clearing Appearances Applied to an Assembly
You can clear all appearances that have been applied in the context of the top most assembly level using the Clear Assembly Appearances option from the Appearance Gallery. Appearances applied to individual parts that are applied outside the context of the top most assembly level, are retained. When you open these parts in separate windows, the part level appearances are visible. For example, if you apply “red” as an appearance to a part in an assembly and apply “green” as an appearance to the assembly, the Clear Assembly Appearances option clears the assembly level appearance that is “green” . The appearance applied to the part that is “red”, remains unchanged.
