About Identifying Trim Quilts in Cavity Insert Assembly
In EMX, ejector pins and lifters can be trimmed against a reference model or a cut quilt surface as described below:
• Trim against the reference model—If the ejector pin or lifter intersects with a part that is classified as
Reference model in the
Classify dialog box, a
Trim to Geometry feature is created during the trim operation.
The feature is easy to use and does not require creating additional features inside the reference model. However, this trim feature may fail or not trim the ejector pin as expected, for the following design conditions:
◦ For certain free form shapes, the feature may fail.
◦ If the ejector pin cross-section is not fully covered by the reference model, the feature may not completely trim the ejector pin.
◦ If the ejector pin is defined on a hole, the reference model is not found and so the feature is not created.
If your design has any of the above, create the trim feature against a quilt surface.
• Trim against a trim quilt surface—If the ejector pin intersects with a quilt surface that is identified in the
Trim Faces dialog box, a
Solidify feature is created during the trim operation. You will have to create these quilt surfaces within the reference model.
The solidify feature overcomes the limitations with trim features created against the reference model, due to the following:
◦ The solidify features are stable for free form shapes.
◦ Quilt surfaces can go beyond the reference model geometry and therefore cover the full ejector pin cross section.
◦ Quilt surfaces can be used to fill holes in the reference model geometry.
Use the Trim Faces dialog box to add or remove quilts. You can only use quilts marked as Trim Faces to trim ejector pins or lifters. When there are no quilts in the list, you cannot trim lifters. Trim surfaces can be selected in part, assembly, and manufacturing modes.
1. Click > . The Trim Faces dialog box opens.
2. To remove a quilt, select it from the
Existing trim faces list, and then click
to remove the quilt from the list.
3. To add a quilt, click
, select a quilt in the graphics window, and then click
Close to close the dialog box.
