Getting started—a simple example
This section includes step-by-step instructions to walk you through a simple inspection process. It shows you how to create and export a measurement plan, add inspection results, and then re-import and evaluate the results. The design model used in the example is available under C:\Program Files\PTC\Creo Elements\Direct Modeling [version]\personality\workbook\inspect-ex1.pkg.
Before you start, make sure the following modules are active (Modules under Application):
Click Applications and then, in the Base group, click (dialog box launcher).
3D Documentation
Inspection
1. Create documentation planes:
1. In Creo Elements/Direct Modeling, click Applications and then, in the Free group click 3D Documentation. The 3D Documentation tab appears on the ribbon.
2. Click 3D Documentation and then, in the Setup group, click New Set. The Create Docuplane dialog box opens.
3. Click Accept.
4. Select Front under Type.
5. Click OK.
2. Create dimensions:
1. Click File > Settings > 3D Documentation > Index Settings. The Index Settings dialog box opens.
2. Click the Automatic Create Index check box to ensure the creation of indexes for all new annotations.
3. Click 3D Documentation and then, in the Annotate group, click Linear. The Create Distance Dim dialog box opens.
4. Click Generic.
5. Specify the opposing faces shown (A) and specify a plus/minus tolerance of 0.2 (in PM Value field).
6. Click OK.
3. Create an inspection group:
1. Click Insert and then, in the Groups group, click New Fixed. The Fixed Anno Group dialog box opens.
2. Specify a name such as FixGrp-1.
3. Click Selection and click the dimension you created in the previous step.
4. Click OK.
4. Prepare the group for evaluation:
1. Click Inspection and then, in the Measurement Plan group, click Prepare. The Prepare Measurements dialog box opens.
2. Select the group from the browser (FixGrp-1).
3. Select Add in the Mode selection list.
4. Make sure Face Point Set is selected.
5. In the Request Pts field, enter 4.
6. Click Apply.
7. Click OK.
5. Create an Excel inspection file:
1. Click Inspection and then, in the Check & Store group, click Export CSV. The Export Measurement Plan dialog box opens.
2. Select FixGrp-1 in the browser.
3. Click CSV File and if necessary, change the filename and path.
4. Click OK.
5. The system now generates a HTML report. Visually check this report to make sure it is valid.
6. Enter result data into the Excel file:
These are the results of the measurement operation on the actual manufactured model.
1. Start MS Excel.
2. Load the CSV file (FixGrp-1.csv).
3. In the Result column, enter the inspected value corresponding to the measurement point index:
Index
Result
1.1.1
29.90
1.1.2
30.10
1.1.3
29.70
1.1.4
30.30
4. Save the file (overwrite the existing file) and either close the file or close Excel.
7. Evaluate the result:
1. Click Inspection and then, in the Show Result group, click Evaluate. The Evaluation dialog box opens.
2. Select the input file (this is the CSV you just saved in the previous step FixGrp-1.csv).
3. The system now generates a HTML evaluation report for you to review what has been processed. Minimize it to view the full contents of the Measurement Browser.
The design model is color-coded to show whether or not the four fixed points are within the specified tolerance. If the browser is not showing the data as above, expand the tree and click number 1 in the browser. Interpreting the data in the Measurement Browser is as follows:
Index: This is the fixed point index.
Result: This is the actual measured value made on the manufactured model.
Error: Error of the measured value compared to the design value.
% Error: As previous but expressed as a percentage.
\#N: This is the sequence number of the measurement points for the specified annotation.
Measurement Pt: These are the XYZ coordinates of the fixed points on the design model.
Inspected Point: The XYZ coordinates of the measured point on the manufactured model. (There are none in this example!)
