Grow a surface
Grow extends faces along a set of edges either to existing geometry or to a plane. This command is an extension to Untrim, as you have more control over which edges remain fixed.
Grow does not enlarge geometry; it extends the topology of surfaces. Therefore, if you need to grow a face where the underlying geometry is not sufficient for the grow process, you must first untrim the face, replacing the original geometry with the untrimmed geometry.
Grow is useful for closing gaps between faces. The tool allows you to extend selected loops, specific edges, or all open edges of a part; and you can trim the extended faces to other parts, faces, surfaces or a plane. A Close option can be switched on to add a face at the trimming plane to close the extension from open loops.
To grow a face,
1. Activate the Surfacing module, click Surfacing and then, in the 3D Surface Tools group, click Grow Surface. The Grow dialog box opens.
2. Select the faces you want to grow in one of the following ways:
Click Part and specify the part to grow; all open edges on the part will be extended.
Click Loops and specify the closed loops to grow.
Click Edges and specify the edges to grow. If you select an open loop, you must also specify a trimming plane at which to close the loop with a face, and switch Close on (see the following steps).
3. Select the plane or object at which to trim the extension from the Trim by cascade list.
4. Click Close to close an extension with an inserted face at the trimming plane.
5. Click to complete the operation.
