Oracle 12cR2 patch update instructions
Purpose
This paper is a guide to updating Oracle 12cR2 to the required Patch Update level as of September 2021 for Windows. This Oracle configuration is required if you use Oracle with Creo Elements/Direct Manager Server 20.6.
Overview
To support Creo Elements/Direct Manager Server 20.6, the Oracle base patch installation needs to be upgraded to a certain level of patches. For Oracle 12cR2, Oracle 12.2.0.1 is the base patch that is supported by Creo Elements/Direct Manager Server 20.6 and above. In September 2021, Oracle published a Critical Patch Update (CPU). The latest critical patch updates are to be applied only to the base patch installation. The required critical patches for the Oracle base are as follows:
Server type
September 2021 Oracle CPU for 12.2.0.1 base
64-bit Windows server
33174380
*
The base installation must be either Oracle Client software or Oracle Database server software.
These updates are required to create a supported environment for running Creo Elements/Direct Manager Server 20.6 with an Oracle 12cR2 Database.
Backup
As with any major operation on the database and database files, a functional backup is essential. Ensure that you have a backup and verify that it can be restored if necessary.
Preparation
The update patches must be applied directly to your existing Oracle installation.
1. Review the Creo Elements/Direct Manager Server 20.6 Platform Support document.
a. Click Start > Programs > PTC > Creo Elements Direct Manager Server 20.6 > Server 20.6 > Manager Server 20.6 Manuals. The Creo Elements/Direct Manager Server Documentation page opens.
b. Click Platform Support in the Installation, Upgrade and Migration section. The Creo Elements/Direct Manager Server 20.6 Platform Support page opens.
c. Click Database Servers under Contents.
d. Review the Database Servers table to determine which patches are needed for your type of database.
2. Create a directory to hold the installation and patch files on your own system. For example:
C:\OracleUpdateFiles\
3. Download and extract the Opatch file and the patches for your operating system.
Opatch Update Installation
1. Review the pre-installations and post-installation instructions found in …\Opatch\README.txt. Be sure to follow ALL instructions relevant to your environment.
2. Back up your existing Opatch directory (in ORACLE_HOME).
3. The instructions tell you to extract the zip file directly under your ORACLE_HOME. You can also extract the zip file into your OracleUpdateFiles\Opatch directory and copy it to ORACLE_HOME.
*
This patch does not need to be applied via an installer or command window. The replacement of the Opatch folder puts the required files in place.
4. You can run the opatch lsinventory or the opatch version command to ensure you are at the required Opatch release of 12.2.0.1.6 or later for 12.2.0.1.
a. Open a command window.
b. To set the Oracle home, for example;
C:\>set ORACLE_HOME=C:\oracle\product\12.2.0\db_1

C:\>set PATH=C:\oracle\product\12.2.0\db_1\OPatch;%PATH%
