Packet terminology
Several terms are used to describe packets and their contents.
Think of packets as "envelopes" where you open envelopes and edit the contents and where you can place documents inside an envelope, seal it and send the envelope to another person or group. If you want to, you can remove an unwanted paper from the envelope and place it on a shelf. If the paper is on the shelf, the paper will still be available to you, but you can't edit it or send it. You must edit and send using envelopes.
In Creo Elements/Direct Drawing Manager, packets work the same way. Packets are the "envelopes", the database is the shelf. Packets are like containers that hold your data and let you edit information and send it to others. When you remove your data from packets, the data is still stored in the database. You can access the data anytime through the search function. When you send or edit data, you must use packets.
Packet terminology and the corresponding item in the Workspace window and menus are listed below.
1. Working packet: Models and drawings you save in Creo Elements/Direct Drawing Manager are reserved in your working packet. The working packet is displayed in the Workspace title bar.
2. Information panel: The information panel displays details about highlighted items.
3. Referenced in packet: Although you can view this item in your packet, the item is reserved by another individual. You will not be able to make modifications to this item until they unreserve the item and you reserve the item to your packet.
4. Reserved in packet: When an item is reserved in a packet, the item is locked and other users can not edit it. You must unreserve items in your packet so others can reserve items in their packet. Only reserved items are editable.
5. Unreserve: When you unreserve an item in a packet, it becomes a read-only item, and you cannot change it. The item can only be changed if either you or another individual reserve the item.
Menu commands for managing data in packets
To manage your data in packets, use the following commands from the Action menu:
Reserve to working packet: Reserves the item to your working packet and is editable to only you.
Unreserve: This unlocks the data so others may edit the data. They will need to reserve the item in their own packet first.
Remove from packet: Removes the item completely from your packet. Although the item is no longer visible from your packet, the item is still available in the database.
You can also use the Cut, Copy, and Paste commands to create and move links to data in your packets.
