Import from Microsoft Word
Using the Microsoft Word import functionality you can import work items into a new tracker or existing trackers.
Document Structure
Ensure the Word document uses Microsoft Word styles to define the structure of the work items. The Codebeamer X interprets the following:
Heading Styles as summaries of work items. For example, Heading 1 and Heading 2.
Normal paragraph style following a heading as the description of that work item.
Nested heading levels as indicators of parent-child relationships between work items.
This hierarchical structure determines how items are organized in the tracker after the import.
Example
The following is provided in the image given below:
Heading 1: Transmission.
Heading 2: Transmission TC and Default: Continuously Variable.
Heading 3: Minimum Torque.
Codebeamer creates a parent item for Transmission, a child item for Transmission TC and Default: Continuously Variable, and a sub-child item for Minimum Torque.
*
Codebeamer can import only five levels of hierarchy in a Microsoft Word document. If you import a document that exceeds the hierarchy level limit, the affected items are no longer follow the hierarchy structure.
After the import is complete, the work items appear in the hierarchal tree structure.
Import Window
In Codebeamer X the Import option is available under the More Actions menu of the tracker tool bar in Table View or Document View.
Select Microsoft Word and click Attach a file or drag and drop the file into the area to upload a document. After the upload is finished, click Next to navigate to the preview screen.
*
You cannot import from a Word document if the current tracker has some mandatory fields in addition to the summary and description fields. In this case, a warning appears, and the Next button is disabled. To proceed, modify the tracker’s field settings or start the import from a different tracker.
Preview of imported data Screen
On the preview page you can see the preview of the work item structure and the content. Here you can filter and set the work items and define other import rules.
Using the Preview of imported data screen:
The left pane displays the work item structure in a tree view, showing parent-child relationships. Each item includes the Word heading style in parentheses after the summary.
The content pane displays the title and paragraph of the work items to be imported.
The right pane allows you to define import rules using various conditions and displays the Statistics area and control buttons.
