Importing Tables from Word Documents
You can import tabular data from a Microsoft Word document into a tracker to create multiple work items. This is especially useful when:
• The Word document is generated by another tool and contains data in tabular format.
• Your organization uses Word tables instead of Excel for its advanced formatting or image support.
In such cases, you can import tabular data from Word using a feature that appears on the first page of the usual import wizard of any tracker. It looks like this:
Using Table Import from Word
After you upload the Word file, select the Microsoft Word tables import option in the wizard to import one of the tables from the document. Click Next to continue.
The wizard displays the import page, which is the same as the one used for
Excel import.
If the Word file contains multiple tables usually some introductory tables and one main table with most of the data, the wizard lists all tables found in the document. You can switch between them using the Importing part drop-down at the top of the page. When you select a table, the page reloads and the preview displays the selected table’s data.
Adjust the mapping between the table's columns and the target work items' fields, and then perform the import.
Features of the Word Table import
The table import from Word offers functionality similar to the Excel import. Keep the following in mind:
• Each cell in the selected Word table is converted to wiki format. The resulting wiki text is imported into the corresponding work item field as plain text.
• If a cell contains an image and is mapped to a field, the image is extracted and attached to the target work item.
• Only top-level tables are directly loaded, but nested tables are also supported. If a cell contains a nested table, it is converted to wiki format and appears as a table in the mapped field, for example, the Description field.
Known Limitations
• Only top-level tables are supported. Nested tables are converted to wiki tables during import.
• Cells from Word tables are converted to wiki text. It is not possible to import content as plain text without formatting. For example, bold text in the Word table remains bold after import.
• All imported table data is treated as text.
