Error Message When Trying to Import an Unchanged Word Export from Codebeamer
You receive an error message if you export items from Codebeamer to Word and do not change the exported Word file (.docx file) and try to import it back to Codebeamer. For example, into a different tracker.
Codebeamer detects this scenario, when an unchanged Word document arrives, it rejects the import, and displays the following error message.
As a workaround, modify the Word document, save it, and then try to import the changed Word document.
Why wiki-text is changed during Word- roundtrip? Why other unwanted changes appear?
When editing Codebeamer content in Word you may find that during the import some unwanted changes appear, and some new lines are added or removed or some wiki text, such as, wiki tables have different structure than before.
This is because during the Word roundtrip or Office-edit several conversions happen, and each conversion can bring in some differences, some of the styling or layout may get lost or even errors may happen.
Some such conversions are:
The original wiki text is converted to HTML.
The HTML is slightly modified with CSS so it looks better in Word.
Images are added to the HTML, and they are resized, if necessary.
The resultant HTML is fed to Word, which converts it to its own Word-Markup-Language.
When editing the content in Word, the change-tracking is turned on. This enables us to know which parts are changed during round-trip import.
The round-trip import processes the Word-Markup-Language and converts it back to wiki. It also captures images and comments.
Only those changes are imported back in round-trip which contain tracked changes added by Word.
So during the Wiki->HTML->Word Markup -> Word edit -> Word Markup -> Wiki processing several such conversions happen.
These conversions cannot be perfect because of the largely different feature set of Word and HTML and Wiki. Word is far more advanced than HTML, and HTML is far more capable than Wiki. Wiki is just largerly simplified subset of HTML. Therefore there will always be some differences or features that cannot be converted or retained during these conversions.
Moreover, because these conversions are machine generated the resultant wiki never looks as good as a human written Wiki markup, neither the original wiki markup can be reproduced perfectly during these conversions. Some new-lines and white spaces are added randomly. Some tables are structured differently and many more differences may appear.
The primary objective during Word roundtrip and Office editing is to preserve all information and its structure as accurately as possible. Maintaining the exact visual appearance—such as text colors, alignment, or fonts—is of secondary importance. The least critical aspect, and only if feasible, is ensuring that the resulting wiki closely resembles the original wiki text.
