The resolved documents enable you to view all of the content referenced in a DITA map in a single, aggregated document. The resolved documents are generated from a DITA map. The resolved document for editing enables you to edit all of the topics, and optionally all of the maps, referenced from the current map in a single document. The resolved document for styling enables you to produce a single document containing all of the topics in the map that you can use for stylesheet development with Arbortext Styler. The resolved document for styling is also used in the publishing process. You open a resolved document in Arbortext Editor through the Edit > Edit Resolved Document submenu.

By default, Arbortext Editor automatically generates a temporary resolved document type for the current DITA map you are editing when you open a resolved document. The generated resolved document type persists in Arbortext Editor’s cache directory (.aptcache) for the entire session. For the resolved document for styling, it is recommended that you use the generated resolved document type. For the resolved document for editing, it takes Arbortext Editor about twice the time to open the resolved document with a generated document type than it does with a custom document type. If you have DITA maps that include many different types of DITA topics, you should consider developing a custom resolved document for editing document type. A generated resolved document for editing also cannot validate markup included from a foreign namespace, such as custom definitions for the xml:lang attribute or MathML markup.
