Formatting commands affect the appearance and fine positioning of characters and expressions. TeX input, Phrase, Space, Font, and Size are described below.
• TeX input allows you to enter TeX commands or macros into the Equation Editor.
• Phrase allows you to enter short non-math text, such as might appear between inline math expressions.

Note that when you are within a phrase, you can type spaces directly with the space bar. Symbols are not permitted within phrases, unless they can be inserted as a character entity.

• Space options insert spaces between characters. Different spaces include thin, medium, thick, quad, qquad, and negative thin (which reduces space between characters).
• Font options include:
◦ Roman
◦ Bold
◦ Math Italic
◦ Calligraphic (uppercase only)
◦ Blackboard
◦ Text Italic
◦ Computer
◦ Fraktur
• Size options let you override the Equation Editor default sizes for characters used in mathematical expressions. Characters are normally sized according to their position in relation to other characters in an expression (that is, a superscript D is smaller than a text-level D), and according to the position of the entire expression in relation to the surrounding text (some display symbols are somewhat larger than the same symbols used inline). The choices let you control the size of characters in special situations. The options, Text, Display, Script, and Scriptscript, change the size of the highlighted characters. Use the method for changing fonts (described above) to change the size of any symbol(s) in an equation.
◦ Text is the size of an inline equation, equivalent to the type size of the surrounding text.
◦ Display size is slightly larger than Text.
◦ Script size is the small size in which superscripts and subscripts are set.
◦ Scriptscript is an even smaller type size in which scripts to superscripts and subscripts are set.
The actual point sizes for Text, Display, Script, and Scriptscript are controlled by the configuration file.
