Split Cells Dialog Box
Use the Split Cells dialog box to split one or more table cells into multiple cells. You can split either the cell containing the cursor or a selected rectangle of contiguous cells. Note that you cannot split a spanned cell.
The following options are available:
Number of columns — enter the number of columns you want to split the cell or cells into. The default is double the current number of columns in the selected cell or cells.
Number of rows — enter the number of rows you want to split the cell or cells into. The default is the current number of rows in the selected cell or cells.
When you split a table cell, you are actually increasing the size of the table. For example, assume you have a table that has three columns, three rows, and nine cells:
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Six
Seven
Eight
Nine
If you put the cursor in the middle cell (Five) and split that cell into two columns and two rows, the resulting table will have four columns and four rows:
One
Two
Three
Four
Five
Six
Seven
Eight
Nine
In this case, an extra row and column has been added to the table. Cells Two and Eight are spanned over two columns and cells Four and Six are spanned over two rows.
