Using Publishing Rules
When publishing a document, you can choose a publishing rule to apply a group of saved publishing settings to the document. The settings control formatting and publishing. Publishing rules are available to Arbortext Editor users with publishing enabled, and they’re available by choosing File > Publish > Using Rule.
Publishing rules and rule sets are displayed in the Publish Using Rule dialog box. Your choices are dependent on the document type and publishing mode. You can choose one or more publishing rules and rule sets from the list.
Your publishing mode is determined by whether you are Using Arbortext Publishing Engine for Publishing Documents or you are publishing locally with Arbortext Styler, a Print Composer license and/or a Web/Wireless Composer license:
If you are using Arbortext Publishing Engine, the Publish Using Rule dialog box displays server rules and rule sets created for publishing documents on the Arbortext PE server. These rules may be located in a rule file on the Arbortext PE server as well as in a local rule file that was created with Arbortext PE server publishing enabled. Rules for publishing locally are ignored, and you can't send one to the server with your document.
You can check Tools > Preferences > Publishing Engine to see if you are using Arbortext Publishing Engine. A checked box means server rules will be listed in the Publish Using Rule dialog box. If it’s clear, then you can enable it or use Arbortext Styler or a Print Composer license and/or a Web/Wireless Composer license.
If you are using Arbortext Styler, a Print Composer license and/or a Web/Wireless Composer license, the Publish Using Rule dialog box displays local rules and rule sets created for publishing documents locally. These rules may be located in a rule file on another machine (such as a file server) or in a rule file on your own machine. Rules created for publishing with the Arbortext PE server are ignored, and you can't use a server rule with your document.
You can check to see if local publishing is supported by choosing Help > Session.
You can view the entire set of publishing rules and rule sets available to you by choosing Tools > Administrative Tools > Publishing Rules. The list of rules is the combination of all rules and rule sets from all available rule files. A rule file can contain both rules and rule sets, and those rules and rule sets can be either local or server. The Target column displays whether a rule or rule set is a local or server publishing rule. This is a good way to determine if the list of rules you can choose from are the ones you expect to see.
Rule files may be located in local or server directories, such as a custom\publishingrules directory, the Arbortext-pathpublishingrules directory, and your home directory (set by the HOME environment variable). If you are using Arbortext PE server, it may offer rules and rule sets from a read-only rule file. Rules stored on the Arbortext PE server are listed in the Publishing Configuration report available from Help > PE Configuration.
To see which publishing rule file contains a particular rule or rule set:
1. Open ToolsAdministrative ToolsPublishing Rules.
2. Highlight a publishing rule or rule set from the list.
3. Choose View Details and find Rule File.
You can see all available rule file locations by choosing Help > Session and finding the entry for Rule file path on the Session tab.
