Inserting and Displaying Comments
Adding notes to a document for yourself or others who work on it can be helpful and convenient. You can do this in Arbortext Editor by inserting comments. Comments do not appear in the published document. They do appear in the Edit view of your document.
Adding Comments to a Document
Follow these steps to add a comment to your document:
1. Place the cursor where you want to add the comment.
2. Choose Insert > Comment.
Note that you must have Full Menus turned on to see this menu choice. To turn on Full Menus, go to Tools > Preferences and choose the Window category in the Preferences dialog box. Select the Full Menus check box.
3. With your cursor between the _comment tag pair, enter your notes or comments.
Moving Selected Text and Markup into a Comment
In addition to using comments to add notes to a document, you can also select either just text or both markup and text in your document and move that content into a comment. This enables you to not include that content in published output. When you include markup tags in a comment, the tags are converted to text inside of the comment. For example, if you select a para tag inside of your document that contains the text “This is a comment.” and then choose Insert > Comment, the following content is moved into a comment:
<para>This is a comment.</para>
Note that you cannot move markup to a comment when removing that markup would make the structure of the document invalid. You can add commented text and markup back to your document with the Edit > Uncomment menu choice. If you move a comment containing markup to a different location in your document and try to uncomment that content, then the commented markup must be valid in the new location or the uncomment operation is not allowed.
Follow these steps to add existing text and markup in your document to a comment:
1. Select the content you want to move to a comment.
2. Choose Insert > Comment.
The selected text and any selected markup is moved to a comment.
3. Place your cursor inside of the comment and choose Edit > Uncomment.
The text and any markup in the comment is moved back into your document.
*
You cannot insert markup tags within a _comment tag pair. If you want to be able to add markup tags, use a marked section (Entities > Marked Sections) with the status set to ignore. Note that marked sections are only valid for SGML documents.
Hiding the Display of Comments
If you do not want to display comments in the Arbortext Editor Edit view, you can use the Preferences dialog box to hide comments:
1. To turn off comments display, choose Tools > Preferences to open the Preferences dialog box. Select the View category, and clear the Comments check box.
Your comments are hidden and the comment tags display as a double-pointed arrow icon.
2. To turn on comments display, go to the Preferences dialog box. Choose the View category, and check the Comments check box.
