Deleting Text with the Backspace Key
To delete text to the left of the insertion point, press the backspace key. Each time you press and release the backspace key the insertion point moves back one space. The space, or the character occupying it, is deleted.
To continuously delete characters to the left of the insertion point, press and hold the backspace key. The insertion point moves backward rapidly, deleting the content of the line as it goes.

If generated text is encountered while deleting using the backspace key, the generated text will not be deleted. You cannot edit generated text in a document. When you press backspace with the insertion point to the right of generated text, the insertion point skips over the generated text. This might be disconcerting if the View > Generated Text > Show is selected, making generated text visible. Pressing backspace once will cause the insertion point to jump from the right of the generated text to the left of the generated text, deleting the first character to the left of the generated text.
