Sorting Index Terms
Index terms are sorted according to the Western European character set defined in ISO 8859–1. Sorting is case-sensitive. When cases do not match in the document's indexterm elements, the terms may appear out of order. Lower case characters are sorted first and appear first in the index.
You can customize sorting to specify where an index term will occur in the index. Use the sortas attribute to cause an index entry to be included under headings other than the one determined by default sorting. The value entered for the sortas attribute, not the index entry itself, is used to determine the sort order. Specify a sortas value for any primary, secondary , or tertiary element to control sorting.
To customize sorting for index entries:
1. Determine the alternate sort key you want to use. (See the example below.)
2. Enter indexterm elements at the appropriate place in the document and with appropriate text content.
3. Press Ctrl + D to open the Modify Attribute dialog box for the index element you are specifying sorting for.
4. Enter the sort key in the sortas attribute text box.
5. Click OK.
