Inserting Symbols
When running Arbortext Editor, you can insert two types of symbols in your document. You can insert a symbol (character code) that is part of a specific font family, and you can insert a character entity from a list of character entities declared in the current document. Each of these symbol types is inserted using the Insert Symbols dialog box.
Quickly inserting symbols
1. To quickly insert a symbol, click on the down arrow to the right of the Insert Symbol toolbar button to list the symbols recently used or defined in the current document. (This list includes character entities and font family symbols with corresponding character entities.) Select one of these symbols to insert it in the document.
Inserting symbols from font families
1. Place your cursor in the document at the location you want to insert the symbol.
2. Choose Insert > Insert Symbol (or click on the Insert Symbol toolbar button) to display the Insert Symbol dialog box. By default, the Symbol tab is displayed.
3. Select the font family (and optionally, the family subset) containing the symbol you want to insert. The listed font families are those that are installed on your system.
4. Click on the symbol you wish to insert and click Insert. The symbol's character code is inserted in your document. If the symbol has a corresponding character entity, the symbol is added to the Recently Used Symbols list.
When the character code is inserted, by default a _font PI (processing instruction) is inserted around the symbol character code if the inserted symbol is of a different font family than the font family at the current cursor location. If set insertsymbolfontpi is set to off, the Unicode character value is inserted with no _font PI.
Inserting symbols as character entities
1. Place your cursor in the document at the location you want to insert the symbol.
2. Choose Insert > Insert Symbol (or click on the Insert Symbol toolbar button) to display the Insert Symbol dialog box.
3. Choose the Character Entities tab to display a list of the character entities defined in the current document's document type.
4. Click on the symbol you wish to insert and click Insert. The character entity is inserted in your document and the symbol is added to the Recently Used Symbols list.
