Inserting Symbols by Name
Rather than selecting symbols from the menu, you can use the F2 function key to bring up a response panel. This panel enables you to insert a character or symbol into an equation by typing its name as it appears on the menu. The TeX name, as it appears in the :menu section of the Equation Editor configuration file, can also be used. This feature is useful when using a symbol or construct that is located on a second or third—level menu. It may be faster to type in the symbol name on the response panel than to select it from the menu.
You can also insert any symbols supported by the document type by using the response panel. Be sure that you precede the entity name with an ampersand (&).
To insert a character, for example, the operator o dot:
1. Have the marker point to the insertion place.
2. Press F2. The Equation Editor Response Panel appears.
3. In the Enter symbol name or command entry field, type in the name of the symbol as it appears on the menu. In this example, type: o dot. (Do not include the menu path names such as Symbols or Operators used to access the menu where the symbol is located.)
4. Click OK. The symbol appears where the marker is pointing.
To remove the prompt without entering a symbol or command, click on Cancel.
If you misspell the name of the symbol, the message, Could not resolve symbol name, appears in the message window. In this case, press F2 and type the name of the symbol again. If this fails, check the menu where it appears or the Equation Editor configuration file (apteqn.cf) for the correct spelling.
