The GIF format is well documented and supported by many applications. GIF stores multiple bitmap images in a single file for exchange between platforms and systems. However, GIF images cannot have a pixel depth greater than 8–bit.
GIF is a stream-based format. This means it consists of data blocks combined with protocol information, which requires the information to be read as if it were a continuous stream of data. The various blocks of data defined by GIF can be located anywhere within the file, which makes it difficult to encapsulate every possible arrangement of GIF data.
Arbortext Editor displays and publishes GIF images with the following limitations:
• Arbortext Editor has partial support for GIF images with transparent backgrounds. Arbortext Editor renders transparent GIF images in the edit pane with the canvas color or table cell color replacing the GIF image's transparent color. Arbortext Editor prints transparent GIF images with white backgrounds. When publishing to other destinations than print, GIF images will retain any transparency information they contain.
• Arbortext Editor renders and prints only the first frame of animated GIF images. When publishing to other destinations than print, GIF images will retain any animation sequencing they contain.
