Adding Cross References
Cross-references have two parts:
Assigning an ID to the element to be referenced
Referencing the element
Assign an id to the information to be referenced:
1. Click on the element you want to reference.
2. Press CTRL+D. The Modify Attributes dialog box for that element opens.
3. Click in the id text box. If there are multiple tabs, you might have to click on another tab to find the id text box.
4. Enter a unique identifier for this element. It must begin with an alphabetic character. If you are doing extensive cross-referencing, it is a good idea to devise a logical system for assigning Ids.
5. Click OK. The id attribute you added is visible in the Document Map or on the Element tag if you have tags on.
*
When applying an id attribute value to document components like chapters, sections, and appendices, assign the id to the element itself not the element title. For instance, you would assign an id to a chapter element, not to the title element within chapter.
Reference the element by its id:
1. Place the insertion point where you want the cross-reference to appear.
2. Click the Insert Markup toolbar button. The Insert Markup dialog box opens.
3. If you are using the Arbortext XML DocBook document type, select Reference as the Category.
4. Select xref from the element list, and click OK. The Modify Attributes dialog box opens.
5. Click in the linkend box. Notice that linkend is underlined. That is because it is a required attribute.
6. Enter the unique identifier that you assigned to the element you want to reference.
7. Click OK.
