You can define a publishing rule or a set of rules to hold your favorite publishing settings. Create a publishing rule or rule set by choosing:

Publishing rules are supported if you are either Using Arbortext Publishing Engine for Publishing Documents or you are publishing locally with Arbortext Styler, a Print Composer license and/or or a Web/Wireless Composer license. The type of rule you create is based on the type of publishing enabled when you create the rule, server when you are publishing with Arbortext Publishing Engine or local when you are publishing with Arbortext Styler, a Print Composer license and/or or a Web/Wireless Composer license.

If you are unsure of the kind of rule you are creating, you can check Tools > Preferences > Publishing Engine to see if you are using Arbortext Publishing Engine. A checked box means you will be creating a server rule. If it’s clear, then you would be creating a local rule. You can check Composer licenses by choosing Help > Session.

The rule type is automatically assigned, and you won’t be able to choose whether a rule is for local or server use. The designation is permanently associated with the rule. The rule uses the document type for the document you are currently editing, so it presumes the availability of that document type as well. A rule is offered to the user based on what matches the publishing mode and document type.

A local rule file may be located in a local or server directory, in locations such as a custom\publishingrules directory and your home directory. A file server custom\publishingrules directory may be accessible through a path specified by the APTCUSTOM environment variable.

If you are using Arbortext PE server, it may have a read-only rule file available for Arbortext Editor users but it will not be offered as a location where you can save a rule or rule file.

When you save a rule or rule set or create a rule file, the available directories are determined by the locations where you are allowed to save rule files. Rule files may be located in a local or file server directory, such as a custom\publishingrules directory as well as your home directory. A rule file can contain both local and server rules and rule sets.

If you are using Arbortext PE server, it may offer rules and rule sets from a read-only rule file, but you won’t be able to save rules to that server. Rule sets and rules stored on the Arbortext PE server are listed in the Publishing Configuration report available from Help > PE Configuration.
