Free-form XML
Description
The Free-form XML document type lets you create and edit valid XML documents that do not have DTD declarations. This document type also lets you edit existing XML documents containing DTD declarations that reference DTDs you do not have access to. Edited XML documents with DTD declarations will maintain their original DTD declarations when saved.
Tag help is not available for elements in the Free-form XML document type.
The document type includes a template and sample document and stylesheet that is only applicable to the sample document. The template is an empty document.
Considerations When Working with Free-form XML
Following is a list of topics to consider when editing Free-form XML documents using Arbortext Editor.
• SGML requires a DTD declaration. If you are editing an XML document with no DTD, the > feature is disabled.
• When editing a Free-form XML document, the context checking, completeness checking, and change validation features of Arbortext Editor are disabled.
• Arbortext Editor lets you customize document types using a document type configuration file (.dcf). One purpose of the .dcf file is to identify the DTD elements that are graphics, and the attributes of these elements that are graphically meaningful. Since a Free-form instance has no DTD, it cannot have a .dcf file in which to specify graphic tags. To insert a graphic tag in a Free-form XML instance, you must style the tag as a graphic in Arbortext Styler.
• Most DTDs that contain graphic tags also define various Notations for use with graphic entity declarations. An instance with no DTD has no pre-declared Notations. Therefore, before you can declare a graphic entity, you must first declare a notation by choosing > .
• No table models are supported with the Free-form XML document type.
